The Jackal Who Killed No Elephants

A lion, finding a baby jackal alone on the trail after an unsuccessful hunt, could not bring himself to kill so young a creature, and brought him home alive to the lioness instead. She too refused to feed on a baby merely because hunger demanded it, and raised him as her own third son alongside her twin lion cubs.

The three grew up together without any of them realizing the jackal was different, until the day a wild elephant wandered near and the two lion cubs charged at it eagerly. The jackal, understanding the danger they did not, warned them off and ran for home himself -- a decision born of real wisdom, since a jackal has no business fighting an elephant.

But the twins, seeing only that their brother had fled, mocked him mercilessly when they returned. Wounded pride overtook the jackal's good judgment, and he declared he would kill them both to prove his courage was equal to theirs.

The lioness, seeing how serious his anger had become, finally told him gently what she had always known: he was born a jackal, not a lion, and no amount of courage or pride could change what fighting an elephant -- or his own brothers -- would cost him. It was not weakness that made him step back from the elephant, but the truthful knowledge of his own nature.

She sent him off to rejoin his own kind before his wounded pride could destroy him, and the jackal, understanding at last, quietly left to live among jackals -- carrying real wisdom about elephants, wrapped in a lesson about knowing exactly who you are.
