Godly and June

A holy man named Godly, who had grown wealthy from the offerings of the faithful, trusted no one and kept his treasure bundled under his arm day and night, unable to enjoy the very wealth he had accumulated.

A clever rogue named June, noticing the treasure and unable to steal it by force given the cell's solid walls, decided instead to win Godly's trust. He approached with elaborate displays of spiritual devotion, begged to become a disciple, and spent months performing humble service -- rubbing Godly's feet, fetching his supplies -- all while Godly still refused to set the treasure down even for a moment.

Eventually Godly was invited to a distant village for a ceremony, and June accompanied him as his trusted attendant. Crossing a river along the way, Godly finally set his bundled treasure down to bathe, asking June to watch over it -- the first time in the entire relationship he had let it out of his own grip.

The instant Godly stepped away, June seized the treasure and vanished. Godly returned to find his disciple and his life savings both gone, and spent the rest of the tale in devastated pursuit, encountering along the way two other cautionary scenes of misplaced trust and thoughtless behavior before finally recovering some measure of peace.

The story is remembered as a caution about patience in deception: the most dangerous betrayals often come not from strangers who threaten openly, but from those who invest months in appearing trustworthy specifically so that, in one unguarded moment, real trust can be exploited completely.
